The Benefits of Lymphatic Drainage Massage for Lymphedema After Mastectomy or Lumpectomy

Lymphedema is a common and often frustrating condition that can arise after breast cancer surgeries, including mastectomy or lumpectomy. Lymphoedema occurs when lymph fluid builds up in tissues due to the lymph system being compromised. This leads to swelling, discomfort, and potentially long-term complications. One highly effective technique that can help manage lymphedema is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD).  This gentle and specific massage technique along with correct compression advice can offer significant relief and improve the quality of life for many patients post-surgery.

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is the accumulation of lymphatic fluid, typically in the arms or legs, due to a blockage or damage to the lymphatic system. After mastectomy or lumpectomy, lymph nodes are often removed or damaged, disrupting the fluid drainage process. As a result, fluid may have a tendency to build up in the tissues of the arm, hand and chest, causing swelling, discomfort, and reduced mobility.

Though there is no cure for lymphedema, MLD can be a primary part of the treatment plan. If caught early enough lymphoedema can be kept very much under control.

How Lymphatic Drainage Massage Works..

Lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system. The massage therapist uses light pressure, and specific Fill and Flush strokes to encourage the flow of lymph fluid and help it drain toward the lymph nodes, where it can be filtered and reabsorbed by the body. Our aim is to reduce swelling and improve the overall function of the lymphatic system.

For those with lymphedema post-mastectomy or lumpectomy, the massage focuses on the areas affected by the swelling, usually the arms, chest, and upper torso. The lymphatic drainage massage may be performed manually or with the assistance of tools, depending on the certified therapist's approach. Here at Select Therapy Gorseinon, Swansea, we generally use a more hands on Fill and Flush approach to ensure we can first hand feel the reduction of fluid. Lauren is Oncology Massage trained and MLD trained to a very high standard.
